"I Don't Believe You Were There"

"With man, this is impossible,
but not with God.
All things are possible with God."
~ Mark 10:27 (NIV)

It's been seven years since April 21, 2006 and there have been some dark places I've gone through to get to where I am today. Places I am ashamed of, but forgiven. Places that had I been stronger, would not have done. This is what I need to write, to exorcise and release in hopes of saving another from the road I chose.

I don't remember much of the rest of 2006, nor the following year, 2007. Those were times of learning to walk again, to take care of myself without help. John remembers them. Nelson and our daughters remember. I'm blessed that I don't.

This post is not about what sent me to the Garden, but rather what has taken place since. I know others prayed for me, suffered through it, and I am grateful.

And so, it begins ~

It didn't feel good not to be able to teach again. I lost a large part of who I was. Not teach?! Not ever again?! NO!

It didn't feel good to to sell our home. Because I couldn't drive anymore, nor did we need the payment, we had already sold my Murano. One of my favorite vehicles. But we, like so many others, spent what we made. Had we held on just another year and a half, we could have kept the home, but it would have always been a struggle. And God had other plans.

The house sold quickly (a great blessing) and we prepared to downsize. A stranger came into our life, sent by God, to help us in areas others couldn't. She found us a beautiful home on the east side of town, and we settled into a wonderful apartment. I should have thrived. I didn't. Leaving a job I loved still hurt deeply. I felt lost. Useless.

Later that year, I had the chance to substitute at a local elementary school and was thrilled! Then terrified. Being led into the classroom, the door closing behind me, I suddenly lost touch with reality and John was called. The words 'psychotic break' was mentioned. (Dr. Mary Neal talks of this in her book, To Heaven and Back. The feeling of wondering if 'this' is a dream or if you're actually back on earth.) An amazing network of family and medical support got me through, but it had serious side effects. I became addicted to prescription pain drugs and began a descent into depression.

Were there reasons to be happy? Of course! We had grandchildren to love. Three lived within twenty minutes of us. But I felt incapable of keeping them. One daughter and her husband even voiced this to us, reducing me to a sobbing mess, but they were right. My adored husband? He loved me, but hated seeing me sad and hurting, so he allowed me to sleep as much as I wanted. He became an enabler and I became a recluse, going into deeper hibernation, my soul crying, 'why did You send me back?!' We rocked on.

2011 began with laughter. A family vacation to the Smokey's and plans for another family vacation in May! This one at Disney World. The year held great promises. John and I took a trip to the Gulf coast in April to visit a friend, and it was then, he says, that he realized a change had to take place. The blessed Holy Spirit whispered to him that he needed to move us south, to a place where there were other retirees, but no one knew us. So much to do, a variety of places to eat, and to top it off, the fresh air off the Gulf of Mexico. We bought a home there the next month.

Now, not only was I in the throes of withdrawal from the prescription drug addiction, but there was the pain of leaving the only child I gave birth to, the sadness of leaving the only family member still talking to me, realizing we were leaving three grandchildren, and saying goodbye to friends of my heart. Sobbing became a daily occurrence. Looking for answers, for peace. Did I ever stop praying? No. Never. I just wondered why He allowed me to return when I couldn't find a reason or a purpose to be alive. I needed to feel needed.

It was a year of major life changing moments. I'm surprised we both survived. But God is so amazingly good and He had plans for both of us. Plans for healing. Plans for new friends, new experiences and the chance to just be us. Not 'victims of a horrid medical accident'.

By Spring of 2012, health issues dating back to the accident surfaced and coupled with a compromised immune system, I was not only sick physically but sick at heart. I prayed. Praying in earnest. Did I feel as if He was listening? I did. Was I listening to Him? No. I didn't want to hear what he had to say. I just wanted to sleep until I 'felt all better'. Talk about being a modern day Jonah!

But there are times when you have to listen. When He makes it impossible to ignore Him. We are blessed with three Godly daughters and they love us very much. Enough to show tough love and we needed it. I needed it. I will forever be grateful to them and love them even more for it.

A Godly physician corrected a serious kidney problem that kept me sick the Spring of 2012. Beginning in 2013, a dear friend told me of an easy way to still eat some carbs but eat healthier (Metabolism Miracle). And through a daughter, we learned of a natural way (thank you, doTerra Essential oils!) to cleanse the physical body. Spiritually, I became a very present part of a bible study with two wise ladies that taught me of a God I never knew. God's Spirit, the Holy Spirit. I began spiritually preparing my heart to do His Will. The healthier I became, the clearer I heard Him. I realized I had been sent back to share what I learned. Sent back to assure the hungry that yes, there IS a God. He DOES forgive and He doesn't want any of His children to choose an eternity away from Him. Away from Heaven. But there IS a Hell and we do have free will. We can choose to follow a Father that loves us deeply or live without Him and spend an eternity in torment wishing our choice had been different.

There are still friends that find it difficult to believe I was in one of His gardens. Telling me it was a dream, much like the nightmares that took place when my body was weaned off paralytic drugs. These questions are valid and easy to answer. NO. It was not a dream. The world is hearing of an increasing number of incidents of near death experiences. Word is being spread of what they witnessed. And that they, too, were sent back to share. Why are certain ones chosen? I don't know. I don't care. I only know we were sent back to encourage, to reach out to the lost, to reassure the believers, and to witness for our Father.

My journey to wholeness has been a long, difficult one. I'm thankful that John listened to Holy Spirit and made the difficult decision to move us. It's been a time of healing, of letting go and grabbing hold. It's been a blessing. But then, when we allow Him to lead us, we are blessed beyond measure. "For I know the plans I have for you, 'declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" ~ Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

I encourage you to read 'Heaven is Real' by Todd Burpo and 'To Heaven and Back' by Dr. Mary C. Neal. Don Piper speaks more of what is after death in his book '90 Minutes in Heaven'. These have encouraged and inspired me.

And always, God's Word. The Bible. His Word is filled with accounts of what we can expect, what He will give us, teach us, and wants for us. He is our Father, our Lord, our King and I will live the rest of my life living a life for Him and talking of what awaits us. I, for one, cannot wait to see the rest of what He has prepared.

I believe His promises to be true. I believe Heaven is real. I also believe He has a plan for me and that He will help, and even carry me, when needed.

"Be still,
And know that I am God."
~ Psalm 4:10 (NKJV)

I am not perfect, but I'm forgiven. I know He loves me. I am excited about today. About tomorrow. I have a God that has given me a second chance. I will spend the rest of my life on earth going where He leads and listening to everything He has to say, even when like Jonah, saying no would be easier. "Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here am I. Send me!'" ~ Isaiah 6:8

Simple Things Make Me Happy

This Master closet was an unorganized mess. Because the bedroom and closet are smaller than the ones upstairs, we chose to make one of the upstairs bedrooms the master. However, with time we began sleeping downstairs more and more and somehow, John's clothes began appearing in the closet. You can go here to see the, what I called, a disaster area. We rent this townhome, so I didn't want to put much money into more shelving and other ways to utilize the space. I purchased the two smaller shelves
and look what a difference an afternoon can make! The top photo is looking straight into the closet. The one just above is to the right. The other part is behind the door. Yeah, small area but now it works! Well,
as long as we don't try to put my clothes in there. I still keep mine upstairs and love having the larger closet. When I get the nerve I'll show you that one. The reason I don't now is that I also store seasonal decor in there at this time. Let me get the floor a bit more organized and I'll share at that time.
This is what used to be the photo below. I still haven't gotten to Walmart or Lowe's to get a small green plant to grow in water in the thin glass jar. When I do that, I'll remove the silk fern behind the ceramic birds. Here's a hint to those of you with a wall outlet in the middle of your wall. We have an entertainment area, complete with surround sound, etc at The Park and we love it! BUT my sweet man did NOT want to hang his large screen on the wall, so I was faced with placing a shelf over the outlet. Which wouldn't have been difficult had you not had wires hanging from below the shelf. (Yeah, the cable outlet is in the middle of the wall, along with another necessary outlet.) While painting the wall, I merely painted the wiring and it blends in so well, you don't see it unless you're looking for it!
We had three adorable munchkins with us for a bit recently and here's some photos from that day. Have I told you before how much we love our grandbabies. I had no idea love could be so wide and so deep.
Pa and Ian were involved with Animal Planet. Normally, it's PBS Kids or a network that shows the older cartoons like Jetson's, Pink Panther, Yogi Bear. We are trying to get him interested in other genres and the Animal Planet is working. For about thirty minutes, then it's "Pa, can we find a kids station?" He and Pa share the same depth of concentration, too. They hear noone, NOONE, when they're watching TV.

Flashback Friday

First, we received this photo from our daughter, Stacey ~
Snow, lots of snow. School was out!
About twenty minutes away is our daughter, Leslie.
And she got snow! Even more once this was taken!
Stacey and Leslie live in Brandon, MS. Jenny lives in our city.
Look how much snow they got at their home?!
Everyone got a nice, clean accumulation of white snow.
Except us. East Prattville did not get much.at.all.
Pooh. It was pretty coming down, and some
is better than none. This year we've had more cold days
and more snowy days, just not here. Not sure why.
But I can remember last year and smile knowing there
were four little ones laughing and playing in the snow.
{Elle was a few months old and uninterested.}

Post a photo from this last year on your blog and let me know. I'll visit and see what you were up to Feb. 11, 2010! Here's the original post from Jenny's site, Our original post can be found here. Personally, I hope we aren't through with the snow, but I have to say that from here. Say it outdoors and people glare at me.

Game of Tag ~ 2008

Looking back at this time last year, I found this and thought it would be interesting to search my memory and heart to answer the following ~ what was 2008 like?!

An unexpected blessing ~ our home on Spruce sold in ten days for way more than we ever dreamed of asking! Thank you, God and Carol Lemon! We listed it on a whim, never dreaming it would become a reality!

Feeling important ~ After a wedding this summer, several things were made crystal clear and I am stronger for that. Remembering what I experienced in The Garden continues to give me confidence, strength and perseverance. My walk with the King is more precious and I know where I shall reside once I pass from this life~I don't feel important but I do feel very comforted.

Craziest thing I did ~ Gave away, gave away, gave away!!! When we moved out of Spruce, we gave away more than I ever dreamed we would do. Some good friends of ours have a booth at a local spot and what she didn't sell, she kept. What we didn't give away, we sold for a song and a dance. It felt so good to move with about as much as we had when we married!

Smartest thing I did ~ Decided to continue with my counseling sessions, realizing that you just don't take care of issues in a year and a half that are 50 years in the making~

Sentimental moment ~ the last dance in the kitchen with Johnny at Spruce and our first dance in the kitchen here in our apartment. I love you, my Johan.

Most enjoyable gift ~ While on a trip to see our Mississippi girls and babies, Leslie invited us to worship and it was one of the most moving and spirit-filled experiences. It is now an expected part of each visit.

Craziest purchase turnabout ~ When the house sold so quickly, we truly had NO idea what we would do. There was nothing on the market we liked as well as what we'd sold. We may build, we may stay, or we may move downtown.

Moments of maturity ~ This year has proven that no matter how much you try to love someone and protect someone, sometimes it just isn't enough.

Huge answers to prayer ~ Our daughters and their families are healthy, safe, and raising their babes to praise our Creator! The surgery and its recovery during October and November was much easier than we ever expected! I have been released from all the specialists and now only have to check in annually!

Consider yourself tagged! Please tell me about your 2008 or leave mea comment so I can visit your blog! Happy New Year!

Looking Back Through 2008

This idea came from Jenny's blog. The trouble I had was choosing which pictures to use. There were so many of our daughters and grandbabies that just.grab.my.heart! Here's a look at 2008 ~

The most significant change in 2008, to me,
was Noah's growth and maturity~
He's taller, there are more curls,
he got his first haircut,
and his confidence has grown~
We got snow in January!
and we were living at 204 Spruce,
our favorite house thus far!
We celebrated Christmas with our daughters
and their families in January,
the weekend it snowed! A white Christmas!
February brought my 53rd birthday!
March was quiet. Windy. Fun.
And I got one of my very favorite
snapshots of Jenny & her sons~
(I love the protective way Ian is
holding onto Noah's hand.) Leslie & Austin drove over to visit
and we had such fun. But then,
we always do. Austin spent the night
with Ian, and we pampered Leslie.
It was her birthday month!
The last weekend in April,
found us on a quick trip to Gatlinburg,
where we made the decision
to see what 204 Spruce was worth,
and if anyone was interested.
They were. Ten days later it sold.
And we moved into a new apartment complex,
as there wasn't anything on the market
that we liked as much as what we sold.
We moved in the first of July.
May was a time of welcoming spring,
with many sweet moments along the way.
And we packed.
And packed.
And traveled to Mississippi.
And packed.
And watched the grandbabies grow.
and packed and moved!
The first of July, John & I celebrated
25 years together.
It's still nice to be married
to my best friend. Jenny planned a gathering of our friends
to help us celebrate at Marchelle's
and it was such a nice evening.
Perfect. In August, Austin turned 5 years old
and we wondered how it was
that just the week before
we were driving over to welcome
his birth~
September brought Brandon's birthday
and hotter weather.
This was to have been the school year
I returned to my classroom.
I didn't. And it was a drastic,
and traumatic, difference.
Brett had a birthday in October,
and the weather finally,
finally, began to cool off!
I had one last surgery to correct problems
from the accident of 2006 and began to enjoy
early retirement from the work force.
Thanksgiving was celebrated at Jenny's home,
and it was also her birthday month!
After having so many holidays at our home
over the years, it was great to be treated
to a meal and not have to clean up afterwards!
Ian made the placecards
and stole another piece of my heart~

Alaina turned three, and more beautiful~Stacey celebrated a birthday!
My mom had her 79th birthday,on the same day Ian turned five~John and I are healthy & happy, and I can't wait to see what 2009 will bring!

It's raining outside again. I can hear it as it hits the asphalt. John is snoring quietly, thank you God for small favors, and the pre-lit tree we have on the counter behind me has a small hum to it. Someone just got out of their car and the horn honked as they clicked on the key after closing the door. Night sounds.

The rain is picking up and it sounds like a helicopter over the interstate, which is a couple of miles east of us. Where we are situated rests between two large hills, so being as protected as we are from high winds and noises, night sounds are normally those you can identify. That's a comforting thought and realization.

I can remember being in a downtown hotel in a large city and while in Baptist South, night sounds carried pain, anger, hurt, and fear. Sirens and wails were common.

When we lived on the dirt road, night sounds were those I grew up with during my high school years. Crickets, owls, coyotes, tree frogs. Nice, but I don't miss them.

No, I much prefer what I'm hearing right now. I feel safe, comforted, and home. Night sounds. Nice sounds.

Christmas & Home~

A few more snapshots after bringing in more decor~
this view is coming in from the foyer.
Below is the view from the recliner we fight over~

And views from the kitchen no one fights over~
Enjoy~
